Gaurav could not be drawn into critiquing his siblings’ education and summarily announced that his brother and sister studied well. ‘My mother told me that my father wanted all of us to study well, so we all do our best in school. He had specifically left a message for me not to waste time with vices and not to get diverted from my task. I do like to play cricket and kabaddi but only when I have finished my studies.’ Gaurav spent his every waking hour either working or studying, with just two hours a day set aside for playing. There was little chance of his attention getting diverted from his goal. Rajesh was proud of the boy and clearly had been instrumental in teaching him the discipline that Gaurav displayed. In that moment when Rajesh and Gaurav were together, it was clear that their relationship filled the absence in each other’s life—of a father and of a child. These were the legacies that would build the future and bring about the change that Rajesh so desperately waited and hoped for.
